Solar Glass

Solar Glass

Solar glass is a key component used in photovoltaic (PV) modules – typically as a front cover to protect the solar cells while allowing maximum light transmission.

Solar glass specifications typically include properties like solar transmittance, thickness, iron content, and mechanical characteristics like tensile strength and Young’s modulus. Specific values vary depending on the type of glass and its application, but generally, solar glass aims for high light transmission, low iron content for minimal color distortion, and sufficient strength to withstand environmental conditions.

Description

General Specifications about Solar Glass

Key Specifications

Solar Transmittance:

This refers to the percentage of solar radiation that passes through the glass. For standard solar glass, it’s often around 91% for a 3.2mm thickness. Anti-reflective coatings can increase this value, sometimes exceeding 93.6% for 3.2mm glass.

Thickness:

Standard solar glass is often 3.2mm thick, but it can range from 2.5mm to 10mm, with 4mm being another common thickness.

Iron Content:

Low iron content (often less than 120ppm or 0.012%) minimizes the greenish tint and maximizes light transmission.

Properties:

Mechanical Properties:

Tensile Strength: Typically, around 42 MPa.

Young’s Modulus of Elasticity: About 73 GPa.

Other Properties:

Density: Approximately 2.5 g/cc.

Expansion Coefficient: 9.03 x 10⁶ /

Hemispherical Emissivity: Typically, around 0.84

Glass Type:

Commonly used types include tempered glass (most popular and cost-effective), soda-lime glass, and borosilicate glass.

Additional Considerations:

Anti-Reflective Coatings: These coatings reduce surface reflection, further enhancing light transmission.

Durability and Strength: Solar glass needs to withstand various environmental factors like wind, rain, and temperature fluctuations.

Specific Applications: Solar glass can be used in various applications beyond standard solar panels, including building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) where transparency and
aesthetic considerations are important.
